Kibutz Zikim Near the Israel-Gaza border, October 2018
The Israeli media does not report on the current war that is going on the Gaza border. It cooperates with the government in attempt to prevent escalation.
For a long time, I didn’t share the information I’m getting through the Israeli social media. I didn’t share it because I cannot confirm it. However, there’s so much of it that it can’t be ignored anymore. The straws that broke the camel back were pictures of a fire in Kibutz Zikim from last weekend. It was a cry for help on Facebook that I’m responding to.
The following is a translation of a WhatsApp message that is currently circulating among Hebrew speaking Israelis. I cannot confirm its authenticity. You’ll be the judge of that.
“I am an (Israeli) fighter who is currently holding the line on the border with Gaza and I think that you should share with others what is going on here. I read the news on the internet and I’m shocked that the media ignores what’s going on here in this sector! These are not disturbances, it is a war for all intended purposes. I go home, tell people what’s going on here and they’re in shock! They have no idea what really happens at a short distance from their home!
We have been dealing night after night with new and sophisticated Hamas units that throw at us hundreds of grenades, explosive devices, Molotov cocktails, and fire live ammunition, while they are hiding in crowds of women and children, so that we will not return fire. Not that we will return fire because the new instructions are confusing and frustrating. At the same time, the sky explodes with huge explosive balloons. Fires all around us. I cough a black mucus for a month from the smoke of the hundreds of tires they burn. I am sure that it is causing me future health damage, but nonsense … We also do not approach the fence because of the explosive charges they slip in everything, even in the handles of flags.
Hamas understood and learned our weaknesses and exploited the situation. Hamas sends children to cross the fence. They come so close to us that we can see the white in their eyes. Of course, we retreat and they loot and burn our positions. We are also prevented from returning fire to the sources. Instead of attacking, we are hiding to avoid the snipers.
Our government abandoned us on the battlefield. We feel alone. This week there were alerts about the escalation of balloons with chemicals!!! And silence again. I am not allowed to tell everything that goes on here. The situation is much more difficult and complicated than I wrote, but calling it a disorder is a minimization of the situation. It is a one-sided war, but still a war!
I heard the defense minister boasting that we killed 8 terrorists during the weekend. To keep it in proportion, there were more than 20,000 terrorists in one night, who threw at us over 200 hand grenades and explosive devices, and from which 8 were killed. Now multiply that by a week, does this sound paraphrasing it to you? It’s not true that we have no casualties, maybe we are not seriously injured, but there are injuries, and how we do not have losses yet, is a riddle. It seems that we are protected by a higher power.
A soldier in Gaza.”
