What Israeli soldiers are singing about?

by Gideon

A lot can be learned about a nation and its values by the type of songs its soldiers sing.

There are countries where soldiers sing songs about defeating enemies, glorious victories, or about the next war. In the case of Israel’s enemies, some of the lyrics are pretty graphic. The lyrics of a song sang by soldiers of the Gaza based terror organization Hamas includes sentences like:

“Wipe out all the Zionists…burn soldiers and their bases.”

“Exterminate the cockroach nest, expel all the Zionists.”

The Lebanese terror organization Hezbollah has its own version. Its lyrics include sentences like:

“Israel started the fire. With our blood, we will extinguish it.”

Israeli soldiers do not sing about war, glorious victories, or defeating the enemy. They sing about peace, about a better tomorrow, and about the day when they won’t need to fight anymore.

If you want to know what the Israeli army is all about, all you need to do is to listen to the songs in the four videos posted here. Unlike Israel’s enemies, the ultimate goal of the Israeli soldiers is peace, not war.

The English translation of the lyrics is shown after each song.

FLOWERS IN THE BARREL

FLOWERS IN THE BARREL

The sun will shine red between Gaza and Rafah
the moon will whiten over the peak of Hermon
flowers in the barrel and girls on the watchtower
loads of soldiers will return to town.

How good it is that you came home
took a bath,
put the kid to sleep,
he waited for you, asked where dad is
he did not know you went
to bring the peace
the sun in Giv’on Dom
and the moon in the Ayalon valley
dreaming of this place
the day we’ll stop fighting there
and we’ll start breathing there
fast like a water spring
the surviving and liberated
pull a relation pull a relation pull
joy and smile love and innocence
liberation of two nations
from slavery to freedom
girls on the watchtower instead of soldiers
flowers in the barrels instead of shells
I dreamt of the day, woke up in tears
listen and I’ll let you see.

The sun…

Enough crying little sister,
wipe your eyes dry
I stand by your side,
I hold your hands
everyone dies at the end,
it’s important to me for you to know
that even though he fell a space stays in my heart
again brothers fall like leafs in autumn
and it’s easiest to get up and leave
but they say different place different luck
but there’s no hiding from your fate
so we stayed here and built a house
we believed in doves, peace, olive branches
and stood at the anthem, served in the IDF
and buried soldiers, sat & cried in shiv’ah
fell to our knees and again up on our feet
when out of bullets we used our hands
enough, our weapon broke waiting for peace
I’ll stop dreaming this when my heart stops to be quiet.

After 56 years
of defence over the house
almost the dove lost hope
and the olive branch is in my mouth
but we’re here to remind everyone
that it’s forbidden to give up on the day
we need to interweave our folded hands
and together we’ll turn dream into reality.

Flowers in the barrel and girls on the watchtower
loads of soldiers will return to town.

The sun…

Believe It A day will come

Believe It A day will come

Today it’s our war, sister
therefore I am far from here.
Celebrate our meeting
in our little kitchen.

In my chosen place
put a full glass of wine
rejoice as thought I
sit with you as always.

Chorus:
Believe it a day will come
It’ll be good, I promise you
I’ll come to embrace you
and make you forget everything.
(x2)

Yesterday we went out to action
until the first watch of the night
today we were quiet and calm
and the moon is so silvery.

I remembered my meeting with you
and your green dress
tonight I feel good, I said
for you are near from far away.

Chorus (x2)

When the mouths of the devils are barking
the mortars sigh and groan
then I bring my thought
to you, bad but a sister.

And then I’ll know – the battle has a taste
even though the price is very dear
so that a day will come sometime
we’ll be able to breathe here and live!

Chorus (x2)

And if sadness is in your heart,
lift up your head, take courage
for this one that loves will return to you, beloved.

And if your sleep eludes you at times
hum this little tune
and you will hear a song of the homeland
in my footsteps on the threshold.

Chorus (x2)

Tomorrow

Tomorrow

Tomorrow perhaps we will set sail

from the shores of Eilat to the Ivory Coast

and on the old destroyers oranges will be loaded

All this is not a yarn and not a dream

It is true as the light of noon

All this will come tomorrow,if not today

And if not tomorrow then the day after

Tomorrow a thousand buildings will rise

and a song will hover on the the terraces

and a blaze of anemones and tulips will burst from amongst the ruins

All this is not a yarn and not a dream

It is true as the light of noon

All this will come tomorrow,if not today

And if not tomorrow then the day after

Tomorrow perhaps in all the paths

a lion will lead a flock of sheep

Tomorrow a thousand of clappers will bleat in the many bells of holiday

All this is not a yarn and not a dream

It is true as the light of noon

All this will come tomorrow,if not today

And if not tomorrow then the day after

Tomorrow when soldiers rake off uniforms

alerted to other things

Then each man will use his two hands to build  that of which he dreamed today

All this is not a yarn and not a dream

It is true as the light of noon

All this will come tomorrow,if not today

And if not tomorrow then the day after

WE DON’T NEED

WE DON’T NEED

Our eyes are already dry from the tears
and our mouth is left mute of sound,
Tell me, what else can we ask for,
we have already asked for everything,

Give us rain in it’s due time,
and scatter flowers for us in the spring,
And let him come back to his home,
we don’t need more than that.

We have already hurt a thousand scars,
and we hid a sigh deep inside,
Our eyes are dry,
please tell us we passed the test.

Give us rain in it’s due time,
and scatter flowers in the spring,
Let her be with him again,
we don’t want more than that.

We have already covered one grave and another,
We’ve buried our heads among the gum trees,
In a minute the sigh will burst out,
accept it as a personal prayer.

Give us rain in it’s due time,
and scatter flowers in the spring,
And let us return and see him,
we don’t want more than that.
