“There are no winners just losers” is one of the most common phrases used when discussing a global nuclear war. In Israel it is called the Samson Option. A massive retaliation with nuclear weapons as a “last resort” against a country whose military has destroyed much of Israel. The name is a reference to the biblical Israelite judge Samson who pushed apart the pillars of a Philistine temple, bringing down the roof and killing himself and thousands of Philistines who had captured him, crying out “Let me die with the Philistines!” (Judges 16:30).

We are in a midst of a global nuclear power struggle. Nuclear bomb hasn’t exploded. However,  people lose their life every year  fighting in a secret war for possession of a nuclear bomb. Many of them are radical extremists who will not hesitate when dropping a nuclear bomb on innocent people if they thought that they could get way with it.

There is one country who keeps things under control in the most unstable region of the world; the Middle East. Because of it, most of us can sleep better at night, go to movie theaters, and attend sport events without worrying too much about a nuclear threat. This country is the State of Israel. Yes, the country that many love to hate. Israel is fighting a relentless war against radical individuals, fanatic organizations, and totalitarian Middle Eastern countries, preventing them from getting a nuclear weapon.

At this time, the world’s Nuclear Club includes the following countries:

  • United States
  • Russia
  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • China
  • India
  • Pakistan
  • Israel
  • North Korea

If it wasn’t for Israel, who put a stop to it, the Nuclear Club would have included three additional radical and unstable countries:

  • Iraq – Israel destroyed its nuclear reactor in 1981
  • Syria – Israel destroyed its nuclear reactor in 2007
  • Iran – Israel applied relentless pressure on the US and other allies in 2014 and 2015 to force Iran into delaying if not stopping the development of a nuclear weapon.

The only two radical countries who successfully developed nuclear weapons are Pakistan and North Korea. These countries are geographically far from Israel and are not considered a direct threat by Israel. They are a direct threat to other countries in their region, but none other of their neighbors had the courage or ability to take extreme measures to stop them from acquiring nuclear capabilities. The failure of keeping there countries from getting nuclear weapon became a global problem affecting almost every one.

Time will tell if Iran becomes a nuclear power or not.  If it does, it will destabilize the world just as Pakistan and North Korea are destabilize it now. It is unfortunate that the world took an appeasing approach toward Iran instead of learning from Israel.

Although very few admit it, or thank Israel for its actions, there is no denial that Israel had done more than any other country to prevent radical countries from achieving nuclear capabilities.

According to sources outside of Israel, the Jewish state has an arsenal of 150-400 nuclear bombs. This by itself is not a deterrent against a  nuclear attack by its enemies. However, Israel has a calming effect on the entire region when combining its nuclear arsenal  with Its other capabilities: Its ability to intercept and destroy enemy warheads long before they reach its borders, its ability to launch an attack anywhere at any time, its massive data collection capabilities (drones, satellites, and espionage), and its aggressive posture.

Israel maintains ambiguity about its nuclear capabilities. It is not  done to deter other Middle Eastern countries from joining the nuclear race. It is not done to keep Israel’s enemies in the dark about the IDF’s capabilities. Israel maintains an ambiguity about its capabilities so the US will not be forced into imposing sanctions against Israel.

Its about time that people around the world recognizes Israel’s contribution to the world’s stability and thank its people for what they do instead of taking every opportunity to criticize it.
