In his own words: Howard Stern’s complicated attitude toward Judaism and Israel

Howard Stern is a notorious radio personality. Both of his parents are children of Austro-Hungarian Jewish immigrants. Stern grew up on Long Island in the mid-1960s. He received Reform Jewish education. Stern is not enchanted with his inherited religion and is sometimes labeled as a “self-hating Jew.”   On the other hand, his eldest daughter Emily Stern (actress, poet and Torah scholar), practices Orthodox Judaism.

Howard Stern is a strong supporter of Israel.  When  Pink Floyd front man Roger Waters published an open letter to Bon Jovi,  urging the New Jersey rocker not to perform  a scheduled concert in Tel Aviv,  Stern launched an attack on Waters.

“Where do you want the Jews to go, Roger?” Howard said on his radio show.  “You want them to just go back to the concentration camp? What is it you want, fuckhead?”

“Where’s the one place they can stick Jews where no one will be offended? Because the Jews are getting killed all over the world. Give them a little homeland on a desert where there’s no water, where essentially no one could live. And no one did live there despite the bullshit. And the Palestinians are these Arabs that could live in Egypt, that could live in Saudi Arabia, but guess what? Those countries don’t want them either. So insufferably boring skewer version have a country, and Israel has a tiny little country and it bugs the shit out of Roger Waters.”

“Howard Stern, American Radio and television personality, photographer, author, actor, and self-proclaimed ‘King of Media’ stirred up the over 20 million listeners of his radio show, Howard 101, when he said: ‘Defending Israel isn’t fashionable, I know. It is a tremendous distraction for Arab leaders to say, ‘Let’s get the Jews, let’s get Israel, it’s all their fault.’ As long as their poor people are focused on Israel they don’t wake up and realize who is stealing their money. Their lives aren’t getting any better from all this crap, so don’t be fooled by Roger [Waters] and his statements.”’ [Jerusalem Post]

In the recorded segments below, from his radio show, Howard describes how much he loathes his Jewish heritage and his support for Israel.
