Does Obama prepare another anti-Israeli surprise?

Israelis fear that the foreign ministers, meeting in Paris on January 15, will approve another anti-Israeli resolution. Israelis fear that the United States and France want to advance another move on the Israeli-Palestinian issue before the Obama administration wraps up its term.

Israeli ministers were presented with an assessment that during the international foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled for January 15 in Paris as part of the French peace initiative, a series of decisions on the peace process will be made. These will immediately be brought to the UN Security Council for a vote and will be adopted there before January 20.

According to the information that Israel has, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wants to utilize the foreign ministers’ parley, which will be attended by representatives of dozens of countries, to deliver an address that presents his vision for the two-state solution. The senior official said that Israel fears this address will include American principles for resolving the core issues of borders, refugees, security arrangements and Jerusalem. – Haaretz

Palestinians are marshaling their diplomatic capital before U.S. President-elect Donald Trump takes office, hoping that a Jan. 15 peace conference in Paris will lead to widespread European backing for their statehood. Last month’s victory at the United Nations, where the Security Council passed a resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, presents new opportunities for the Palestinians. They plan to accelerate cases against Israel at the International Criminal Court at The Hague, join a raft of international agencies to challenge the Jewish state and push for full recognition of Palestine as a member of the UN. They’ve also started lobbying Trump to reconsider his pledge to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, bolstering Israel’s claim to the city. – Bloomberg

Some 5,000 demonstrators gathered outside the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations in New York on Thursday to express their support for Israel ahead of an international conference on Middle East peace set to be held on Sunday. The gathering was sponsored by the North American Coalition for Israel, which is made up of more than 50 organizations, under the banner “Shame on the UN.” – Jerusalem Post

Barack Obama said in a television interview broadcast on Tuesday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not realize he had a friend in the White House for the last eight years. A Jerusalem Post poll of the attitudes of Jewish Israelis to the outgoing president show that two thirds of them didn’t realize that either. According to a Smith Consulting poll carried out for The Jerusalem Post, 65% of the Jewish public – when asked to characterize the positions of the Obama administration – classified them as “more pro-Palestinian.” Only 12% said Obama was “more pro-Israeli,” another 20% said neutral and 3% did not express an opinion. – Jerusalem Post

The hope is that on January 20th, when Trump becomes the president,  we will have a leader who will be a better friend to Israel, Perhaps he will be able to reverse the damage that Obama is causing to Israel in his last days in office.
